Beetle wings used in embroidery from 19th century India

Check out the newest addition to the Salty Girl line- beetle wing jewelry! These gorgeous, iridescent wings are shed from jewel beetles in Thailand (the beetles have a short life span of only 3-4 weeks, and the wings are only collected after the beetles die). They have been used for centuries in various countries in textiles, paintings, jewelry, as well as many other arts and crafts. The wings were prized for their rich colors akin to jewels and were used to embellish garments and jewelry worn by the elite in many societies.

Katrina Langford Kickstarter campaign!

Help save the planet by supporting an extremely talented up and coming clothing designer from Hawaii! My dear friend Katrina Langford just launched a Kickstarter fundraising campaign and has 29 days to reach her $7,000 goal. She makes some of the most beautiful, original, and seriously cool clothes I’ve seen since I’ve been in Hawaii! She just recently started making accessories as well. (I’m lucky enough to own some of her Katrina’s clothes and accessories because she loves my jewelry and we trade all the time!) Katrina has something extra special going on with her clothing line. Each garment that she makes by hand is recycled AND one-of-a-kind because she buys vintage scarves that she hunts for and handpicks herself. It doesn’t get any better than that! The word recycled used in context the clothing might conjure up images of used, worn out threads, but Katrina’s garments are anything but! The tagline for her brand- ‘Sustainable Luxury Apparel’- is more than appropriate. Her clothing looks expensive, but is very reasonably priced, and is sold at high end boutiques here on Oahu. She’s hoping to grow her business and expand beyond the shores of Hawaii. Thus the Kickstarter campaign..

Behind the scenes- photo shoot with Kaveh Kardan

Last week was crazy trying to fill orders for the holidays, but I still managed to squeeze in a photo shoot with one of my favorite photographers, Kaveh Kardan. He’s been in New Zealand for the past year, and he contacted me to let me know he was in Hawaii and was available to do a shoot. I was thrilled because Kaveh is extremely talented (I’ve been blown away by his work since the first time I saw it!), and our last shoot together was very successful.

Salty Girl Jewelry on ‘The Creativity Salon’

‘The Creativity Salon’ is a locally aired t.v. show that is hosted by Neil Tepper and focuses on the creative arts and people who are living creative lives. Malie Moran, founder of Hawaii Red Magazine was featured on tonight’s taping of the show (will be aired Friday November 18 on O’ahu Channel 52). She talked about her background and fall fashion in Hawaii. Malie invited Katrina Langford and Salty Girl Jewelry to showcase our handiwork on two gorgeous models in a mini fashion show.
